Contact a seller: messages, meetings and demo logins

How to contact the seller of a business on Sitavo: the first message, files, meetings, demo logins — and the questions to ask before you make an offer.

4 min readUpdated

Tap Contact seller on the listing to start a conversation. There is one conversation per listing between you and the seller, so everything about the business is kept in one place — including later offers and the deal. You can also send a general enquiry from the seller’s profile. If the listing is set to «Verified only», you must be verified to message and make offers. Messaging sellers is free.

What you can do in a conversation

  • Write messages of up to 5,000 characters and see whether a message has been delivered and read.
  • Attach files such as PDFs, spreadsheets, Word documents, text files, images and ZIP files (up to 25 MB). Only the two of you can open them. The seller can also send a document straight from the data room.
  • Mark the conversation as unread or archive it — and bring it back under «Archived».
  • See the listing and the status of the NDA, offers and deal next to the conversation, so you always know where you stand.

Your first message to the seller

Sellers reply fastest to enquiries that are specific. Say briefly who you are, whether you are buying privately or through a company, why this particular business interests you, and how you expect to finance the purchase. If the listing requires an NDA, sign it first — the seller can then share figures and documents straight away. See NDA when buying a business. An example:

Hello. I currently run a small webshop in the same sector and am looking for a business I can take over within 3–6 months. The purchase will be financed with equity and a bank loan that my bank has approved in principle. I have signed your NDA and would like to see the accounts for the last two years and hear how much time you spend on day-to-day operations.

Propose a meeting

Tap Propose a meeting in the conversation and choose up to three times. The other party picks the one that suits them, and the meeting can be moved or cancelled — if you move an agreed meeting, the other party receives your new suggestions. You can see all agreed meetings under Meetings.

Meeting typeHow it works

Demo logins for a digital business

If you are buying a SaaS, an app or a webshop, you will often want to see the system from the inside. The seller can send a demo login in the conversation. The details are encrypted, can only be seen by you and expire automatically after 24 hours, 48 hours or 7 days. Ask for read-only access rather than full access, and never share your own passwords the other way.

Good questions to ask

  • Why are you selling, and what will you do afterwards?
  • Where does the revenue come from — and how stable has it been over the last 12–24 months?
  • How many hours a week do you spend on the business, and which tasks can only you handle?
  • Which agreements, suppliers, employees and accounts are included — and do any of them require consent to be transferred?
  • For a physical business: what does the lease look like, and what does the business own (fixtures, machinery, vehicles)?
  • For a digital business: where does the traffic come from, and how dependent are you on one channel or platform?
  • What help will I get after the handover, and for how long?
  • Are you open to seller financing or payment in instalments?

Keep the conversation on Sitavo

Keep the conversation on Sitavo so you both have a record of what was agreed — it also makes it easier to get help if you disagree later. We show a discreet warning if a message you receive looks like fraud, such as a request to pay outside the deal. You can block a user or report the conversation from the menu. Read How to trade safely before you share access or pay.

Getting emails about new messages? You control that under notifications. We only email you about new messages when you are not online. Ready to bid? Read Make an offer on a business.
