Why do businesses not sell?

The archive shows listings that expired without being sold. They can no longer be contacted, but they give an honest picture of what has been offered — and what did not find a buyer. For a future seller it is just as instructive as the list of businesses sold.

Guides on the topic

Step-by-step knowledge that helps you make the right decision.

The most common reasonsThe price does not match the profit.Guide
  • The price does not match the profit. Buyers work from the documented, normalised profit. An asking price built on expectations rather than figures makes serious buyers drop out.
  • The figures cannot be documented. Without accounts, bank statements or traffic and sales data, most buyers stop at due diligence at the latest.
  • The business depends on the owner. If customers, suppliers or know-how sit only with the owner, the risk for a buyer is high — and the price falls.
  • The listing says too little. Without key figures, a reason for selling and a clear description of what is included, buyers have too little to go on.
  • Timing and audience. Falling revenue, a short lease or a very narrow group of buyers can make the sale longer — or impossible at the desired price.

Prepare the sale in good time: tidy up the accounts, document customers and traffic, and make the business less dependent on you. Set the price based on a valuation, and compare with what has actually been sold. The seller’s guide covers preparation and sales material step by step, and market data shows what is on offer in your sector.
