OverviewIn a kiosk or convenience store, revenue is often high relative to profit.Introduction

In a kiosk or convenience store, revenue is often high relative to profit. Look at the gross margin by product group. Tobacco, gaming and parcel collection bring footfall but often earn little, while coffee, snacks and own promotions can earn more. Ask how many hours the owner and family work in the shop. Long opening hours covered by unpaid family members mean the profit in the accounts is higher than you can achieve with paid staff.

Chain agreements and registrationsMany convenience stores trade under a chain or have fixed agreements for purchasing, gaming and parcels.Guide

Many convenience stores trade under a chain or have fixed agreements for purchasing, gaming and parcels. Read them carefully: must the chain approve you, is there a purchasing obligation, and what does it cost to leave? Shops selling food must be registered with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Fødevarestyrelsen) by the new owner, and you should check the latest inspection report, shown as a smiley. Check also which registrations the sale of tobacco and gaming requires, and whether they must be applied for again in your name.

Compare the accounts with till reports, VAT returns and bank deposits. Never pay for revenue that cannot be documented. Look at shrinkage and expired goods, and have the stock counted on the handover date. Sitavo’s indicative range for shops is 1.5–3 times profit, and stock is usually bought separately; read more under shops for sale.
