Guides on the topic

Step-by-step knowledge that helps you make the right decision.

OverviewThe subscriber count is the first thing you see, but open and click rates tell you more.Introduction

The subscriber count is the first thing you see, but open and click rates tell you more. Ask for figures for every send over at least a year, and see whether engagement holds. Ask how the list has grown: organically, through referrals, paid ads or giveaways. Subscribers from giveaways and bought campaigns often read less. Check how many unsubscribe, and whether the list is regularly cleaned of inactive readers.

Platform and consentNewsletters usually run on Substack, Beehiiv, Mailchimp or similar.Guide

Newsletters usually run on Substack, Beehiiv, Mailchimp or similar. Check whether the account can be transferred or the list must be exported and moved, and how paying subscribers are moved with their payment. Consent must cover a new owner sending to subscribers under GDPR. Ask for documentation of how and for what consent was collected, and tell subscribers about the change of owner so they can opt out.

If the newsletter is written under the seller’s name, agree whether the seller keeps writing for a period, or how the tone and sender will change.

Look at income per subscriber too, and at how sponsorships are sold. Does the seller sell ad space directly to regular advertisers, or through a network? Direct deals often pay better but rest on the seller’s relationships, so talk to the main advertisers before the deal.

Price and key figuresSitavo’s indicative range for the category is 2–3.5 times annual profit (SDE).Finance

Sitavo’s indicative range for the category is 2–3.5 times annual profit (SDE). Paying subscribers, regular sponsors and high open rates push the price up. A newsletter that relies on the seller personally, or where income comes from a few sponsors, usually sits lower.
